Moving movable pieces

Drawers, shelves and freestanding units are designed to move — follow these steps to do it safely.

Remove all clothing, boxes and loose items before moving any piece. Weight shifts are the main cause of tipping and scratched floors.

Lift adjustable shelves off their pins and slide drawers fully out. Wrap glass shelves separately in a blanket or towel.

Dragging strains joints and scratches flooring. Lift from the base panel — never from the top rail or doors.

Freestanding units are heavier than they look. One person steadies the top while the other guides the base.

Slide felt pads or a moving blanket under the base, and adjust the levelling feet once the piece is in its new spot so doors close evenly.
